Fix Fortnite crashing to desktop (UE-4 / Athena crash)
Fortnite freezes, then closes to the desktop — sometimes with a "Fatal Error" window, sometimes with nothing at all. This is the most-reported Fortnite PC issue after major updates. The good news: in most cases it's a corrupted local cache, not your PC.
Why this happens
Fortnite recompiles shaders and writes a large cache folder on every update. When that cache gets corrupted (crash mid-update, antivirus locking files, disk errors), the game fails at startup or mid-match. GPU driver issues and overlay software are the other common triggers.
Fixes, in order
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher completely
- Press Win+R, paste and run: %localappdata%\FortniteGame\Saved
- Delete the contents of the WebCache folder (not the whole Saved folder — you'll lose settings)
- Also clear: %localappdata%\UnrealEngine — delete the whole FortniteGame folder inside
- Relaunch the game (it will rebuild the cache)
- Epic Games Launcher → Library → Fortnite → the ⋯ menu → Verify
- Wait for verification (5–15 min), then launch
Download the latest driver from NVIDIA / AMD, choose Custom install → Clean installation. Fortnite is extremely sensitive to driver corruption, and this fixes crashes that survive cache clears.
Discord overlay, NVIDIA GeForce overlay, MSI Afterburner, and RivaTuner are the most common crash triggers in matches. Disable them one at a time and test — overlay injection conflicts are a known UE-4 failure mode.
Right-click the Epic Launcher → Properties → Compatibility → tick Run this program as an administrator. Also check that your antivirus isn't blocking C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Fortnite — add the folder to exclusions if it is.
